INTRODUCTION
Doctor & Gambit, known for its dental hygiene products, recognizes the evolving emphasis on preventive care in dentistry. The company plans to refresh its offerings, expand its reach to new patients, and diversify beyond physical products.
MY ROLE
UX Designer
OBJECTIVE
Make holistic dental care accessible to everyone at little or no cost, regardless of financial circumstances.
KEY FOCUS AREA
- Explore the needs of customers aged 40 and under.
- Link dental care to overall health, confidence, and good habits.
- Use modern tools to create flexible, global solutions.
- Strengthen Doctor & Gambit’s image as trustworthy and innovative.
DESIGN BRIEF
How could we support and delight D & G customers with a better dental hygiene routine?
STEP 1: User Research
For this project, I employed a combination of Guerrilla Research and Open Interviews to gather valuable insights into user habits and needs:
- Guerrilla Research:
- I collected data on oral hygiene habits and routines from friends and family members under the age of 40 who had access to mobile devices.
- This approach allowed me to quickly gather a broad range of information in a natural, informal setting.
- Open Interviews:
- I conducted open-ended interviews with 7 individuals, including friends and colleagues, to gain deeper qualitative insights.
- The interviews explored topics such as:
- Current oral hygiene practices.
- Challenges in maintaining routines.
- Preferred tools and products for dental care.
- Opinions on using a mobile app to support oral hygiene.
This mixed-method approach provided a well-rounded understanding of the target users’ behaviors and preferences, laying the groundwork for the app’s design and features. Here is the questions:
STEP 2: Creating a persona
Based on the information gathered from the interviews, I created a persona.
STEP 3: The Design Thinking workshop
My teammate and I invited six friends and colleagues to organize a design thinking workshop. For the first Ideation, we used the Value Proposition tool, and for the second Ideation, we used the Crazy 8s method.
After the design thinking session, we documented all the ideas, analyzed them in alignment with the company’s objectives, merged certain ideas, and refined the final concept.
THE FINAL CONCEPT
The final concept is a comprehensive dental care platform combining personalized services, an engaging mobile application, and customized products to promote better oral hygiene and healthier habits. The program integrates habit tracking, rewards, and professional collaboration to deliver a unique and impactful user experience.
Key Features:
- Personalized Hygiene Routine
- Users create accounts and input lifestyle habits (e.g., smoking, coffee consumption, sweet intake).
- The app generates free, customized oral hygiene plans tailored to their habits and characteristics.
- Reminders are set for essential tasks like brushing, flossing, mouthwash use, and dental checkups.
- Habit Tracking & Rewards System
- Users earn points for following their oral care routines, such as brushing on time or attending checkups.
- Points can be redeemed for discounts on dental care products (e.g., toothbrushes, floss, toothpaste) or exclusive offers from the company’s product line.
- Dentist Collaboration
- The app recommends dental products based on user habits, such as whitening kits for coffee drinkers or sensitive toothpaste for frequent smokers.
- Exclusive, eco-friendly products are available, promoting sustainability.
- Educational Resources
- Articles, tutorials, and expert tips on maintaining oral hygiene and mitigating risks related to specific habits.
- Gamified challenges encourage learning and adherence to routines.

WHAT I LEARNED
- Creating Personas: Gained valuable experience in developing detailed user personas by analyzing user needs, behaviors, and goals, ensuring a user-centered approach to design.
- Facilitating Design Thinking Workshops: Learned how to organize, lead, and manage design thinking workshops, fostering collaboration and innovation while navigating challenges in group dynamics and idea generation.
- User Research in Guerrilla Mode: Acquired practical skills in conducting efficient and quick user research in guerrilla mode, effectively gathering insights within tight constraints.
- First UX Design Practice: As my first foray into UX design, this project provided hands-on experience in applying tools and methods critical to UX research and design, such as user journey mapping, prototyping, and iterative testing.
NEXT STEP
- Develop the Application: Start by creating low-fidelity wireframes and progressing to high-fidelity prototypes to establish a solid foundation for the app’s structure and functionality.
- Refine the UI Design: Focus on designing an intuitive and visually appealing interface that meets user needs and industry standards.
- Conduct Usability Testing: Test the prototype with users to gather insights, identify pain points, and iterate on the design to ensure a seamless experience.
- In-Depth User Testing: Expand testing efforts to include a larger and more diverse user base for broader feedback and validation.
- Feature Expansion: Explore opportunities to integrate advanced features like AI-driven habit analysis or gamification to increase engagement.
